Holbæk, Denmark, the land of Hans Sørensen and his family

Hans Sørensen is my Great-great-grandfather who joined the church in his native Denmark in the 1850s and, after a lot of persecution and trial, he emigrated with his family in the 1870s.

A history of his life can be found on this website:
http://aeb.buchananspot.com/histories/Sorensen/Hans/index.html

Hans Sørensen and his wife, Ane Nielsdatter were from Holbæk and Sorø, mainly Holbæk, which is just north of Sorø county.

The picture at the top of this blog is from Kragerup and shows one of the Danish flag banners that are commonly displayed in Denmark. This is from the area where Hans was born and raised.

Hans was born in Kragevig.

Kragevig today is a very small place. It may have been small when Hans was born there as well. There really was not much to see.

Later, he apprenticed and worked in Munke-Bjærgby as a weaver.

Here I am by the church in Munke-Bjærgby

They then moved to Tersløse, near Ruds Vedby.

They lived for a time in Ruds Vedby.

Hans and his family lived in Hallenslev, northwest of this area, when they heard the gospel and joined the church. After joining the church, he was rejected by his tradesmen and started work as a day laborer and later as a stone mason and they moved to Aarhus on the Jutland peninsula of Denmark.

In this trip, we did not visit those other areas, only the places of his early life.

I am excited that we were able to see these beautiful places of Hans' nativity.

There were many houses and buildings with thatched roofs like this. We happened to find this one that had been newly roofed on one side. Also many of the homes were of this particular yellow color

Ane Nielsen, the wife of Hans Sørensen, had ancestors from the village of Gyrstinge. We were able to see that place as well.

Denmark is a beautiful place. We found the people to be very friendly and accommodating. It was a wonderful experience to be where our ancestors lived.
