One of our members took us to the Zeppelin Museum in Fredrichshafen last Monday. Graf Zeppelin built up a large manufacturing industry in Friedrichshafen around the beginning of the 1900s and one of the developments of the company was the Zeppelin (and it was not made of lead;-). This company was very prominent in the war efforts of both world wars, and because of that the city was heavily bombed in the second world war and afterwards, because of the treaties, the company was not allowed to make larger air ships any more. Smaller ones are still made and used primarily for advertising and tourism. The company mainly manufactures transmissions and parts for heavy machinery and industry and is the major employer of the area here. They also support many hospital and treatment centers in the area.
The museum in Friedrichshafen is impressive and part of it shows what it was like to be on the Hindenburg luxury ship. The Hindenberg is famous for its explosion in the 1930s over New Jersey in which about 40 people perished.
Here are some pictures of our visit.
